In the recent years, the city has seen a surge in its population, following the overall increasing trend. This influx has further increased the waste being generated. Along with an irresponsible attitude from the residents, the hilly area with rivers has been engulfed in plastic waste of sorts. Most water bodies like Drains, river plains have been contaminated with plastic bags, wrappers, water bottles etc. The lack of law enforcement and poor management can also be attributed as another reason for the waste accumulation.

The former perception of Islamabad as a city with pristine streets, well-maintained green areas and clean air is now obliterated. It is not much different from other overcrowded, unclean, polluted cities anymore. Other than the residents, the rising tourism is also elevating this problem. Tourists irresponsibly discarding their waste in natural habitats pose a threat to wildlife, birdlife, and other species.

Campaigns and Measures

In consideration of the following scenario, a campaign to counter this rising issue has been launched by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination. Director General, Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) Farzana Altaf Shah has stated, “The Ministry is spearheading enforcement of Single-Use Plastics (Prohibition) Regulations, 2023 that bars manufacturing, importing, distribution, sale and use of single-use plastic items”. This campaign is operating under the precise slogan “Say No to Plastics”. The aim of this campaign is accordingly to alter consumer behavior and the seriousness in attitude towards the plastic problem.

In addition to this specific campaign, Romina Khursheed Alam has issued directives of social media strategies, collection and recycling. In order to effectively implement Single-Use Plastics Regulations, 2023. Romina is the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change and hence her authoritative position ensures that her mandates carry significant weight. Single-Use Plastics (Prohibition) Regulations 2023 is intended to mitigate littering and improve healthier lifestyles.
