Apple’s iPhone 17 Air could be its thinnest phone ever—but will it come at the cost of performance?

Apple Pushes Boundaries with Ultra-Slim iPhone 17 Air

Apple is reportedly taking smartphone design to new extremes with the iPhone 17 Air, which is expected to be the thinnest iPhone ever made. According to renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the device will feature an astonishingly slim 5.5mm body at its thinnest point—a significant reduction compared to previous leaks suggesting 6.25mm thickness.

A separate leak from Ice Universe supports this claim, adding that the camera bar on the device will be 4mm thick, making the thickest point of the phone 9.5mm.

How Thin is Too Thin?

To put this into perspective, Apple’s previous slimmest iPhone, the iPhone 6 (2014), measured 6.9mm thick, making the iPhone 17 Air a groundbreaking design shift. This reduction suggests Apple is prioritizing ultra-portability and modern aesthetics, potentially making this the thinnest mainstream smartphone on the market.

Trade-Offs for a Slimmer Design

While the ultra-slim profile is an engineering feat, it might come at a cost. Kuo has hinted that Apple could be downgrading some components to accommodate the thin form factor. This means:

  • Possible smaller battery capacity
  • Lower-end internal components compared to other premium models
  • A focus on design over raw power

Despite the sleek appeal, analysts believe that this model may not lead to a significant sales boost, as consumers might prioritize battery life and performance over aesthetics.

A Camera Bar, Not a Bump

One of the biggest design changes in the iPhone 17 Air is its camera layout. Instead of the traditional camera bump, the new model is expected to feature a full-width camera bar, similar to Google’s Pixel design. This bar will house a single camera, making it a unique departure from Apple’s typical multi-camera setups.

This shift could be aimed at:

  • Providing a symmetrical and modern look
  • Preventing wobbling when placed on a surface
  • Optimizing space for internal components

In Imperial measurements, the body will be approximately 0.22 inches thick, while the camera bar will extend to 0.37 inches.

Expected Release & Final Thoughts

The iPhone 17 Air is expected to launch in the second half of 2025, and Apple enthusiasts will be eager to see if it successfully balances thinness, performance, and premium features. While the ultra-slim design is an exciting innovation, it remains to be seen whether the compromises in battery and hardware will affect its overall appeal.
