ICC to Decide 2025 Champions Trophy Venue Amid Growing Uncertainty

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to meet today to determine the venue and format for the 2025 Champions Trophy, with less than three months left until the tournament’s scheduled start.

The ICC Board is considering three possible scenarios to resolve the ongoing dispute over hosting rights, which has become a major challenge for all stakeholders involved:

  1. Hybrid Model: Most matches will be held in Pakistan, with India’s games hosted at a neutral venue.
  2. Entire Tournament Moved Out of Pakistan: The PCB would retain hosting rights, but the event would be held entirely in a different country.
  3. All Matches in Pakistan Without India: This option, where India would not participate or travel to Pakistan, is highly unlikely due to its severe financial and commercial implications.

Diminished Hybrid Model Prospects

While the hybrid model was initially considered a feasible solution, its chances have significantly declined. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly informed the ICC that it no longer supports this option for the upcoming Champions Trophy. A PCB official remarked, “The PCB has requested the ICC to present a reasonable or acceptable proposal before the board meeting.”

A Possible Shift in Tone

On Thursday, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi hinted at a slight shift in stance, suggesting that the hybrid model could still be on the table if the ICC offers a satisfactory proposal. However, Naqvi maintained that Pakistan would not travel to India unless the current situation is reconsidered.

Future Complications

India is set to host several major ICC tournaments over the next decade, including the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup and the 2029 Champions Trophy. This ongoing issue of cross-border travel between India and Pakistan could complicate future events, with the PCB hinting at a need for reciprocal arrangements for tournaments hosted in India.

Naqvi indicated that if Pakistan were to accept a hybrid model, it would likely come with conditions, ensuring that a similar arrangement is considered for tournaments hosted by India. This stems from the security and government restrictions faced by Pakistani teams when traveling across the border.

Financial Implications

The possibility of an India-Pakistan match being played at a neutral venue remains critical. Failure to find a resolution could lead to substantial financial losses for the tournament, given the commercial value such a clash holds.

Urgent Decision Required

The ICC Board’s meeting will be conducted virtually and may end in a vote if a consensus cannot be reached. With the tournament approaching rapidly, the pressure is mounting to finalize the venue and format.

Pakistan was awarded the hosting rights for the 2025 Champions Trophy in November 2021. If the event proceeds as planned, it will mark Pakistan’s first ICC event since the 1996 World Cup, making it a historic moment for the country.
