In a significant development for Pakistan’s aviation and infrastructure sectors, the new Gwadar International Airport is scheduled to become operational on August 14, 2024. This announcement was confirmed by sources within the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will oversee the soft launch of the airport, marking a key milestone in the country’s efforts to enhance regional connectivity. The project represents a major investment, with the total cost amounting to Rs54.98 billion.

Located 26 kilometers northeast of the current Gwadar airport, the new facility spans 3,000 acres and is designed to accommodate a variety of aircraft, including ATR 72, Airbus A-300, Boeing 737, and Boeing 747. This capability will support both domestic and international flights, boosting Gwadar’s status as a vital hub in Pakistan’s aviation network.

The new Gwadar International Airport is the second greenfield airport in Pakistan, following the new Islamabad Airport. It is expected to significantly contribute to the economic development of the region by improving transportation links and attracting investment.

Currently, about four percent of the operational aspects of the airport are still under construction, with all remaining developmental works anticipated to be completed by December 2025. The airport’s opening is expected to enhance regional connectivity and support the ongoing growth of Pakistan’s aviation sector.
