The federal government announced on Friday the creation of the Universal Service Fund (USF), a new board to oversee the development of telecommunications services across the country.

The federal cabinet has authorised the report of the Ministry of Information Technology (IT) to establish USF – a new board for the development of telecommunication services – with professionals from the sector as members.

According to sources, the Secretary of IT would be the Chairman of the USF Board, with the Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and other Telecom members also joining the board.

The board also includes legal expert Sofia Saeed, finance expert Ayla Majid, telecom expert Muhammad Yousuf, and the CEO of the Universal Service Fund (USF).
