Gold Slips as Oil Surges Past $90 and Fed Rate-Hike Talk Intensifies

Gold prices dropped on Monday as an escalating conflict in the Middle East pushed Brent crude above $90 a barrel, stoking fresh inflation worries just as several US Federal Reserve policymakers began signalling that interest rate hikes might be needed to keep price pressures under control.

Spot gold slipped 0.4 percent to $4,000.55 per ounce, extending a rough patch for the precious metal after it touched a two-week low on Friday and posted a 2.5 percent weekly loss, its worst weekly performance in some time. US gold futures for August delivery followed a similar pattern, easing 0.3 percent to $4,005.9.

Oil’s Surge Is Reshaping the Inflation Conversation

The driving force behind gold’s slide traces directly back to the oil market. Prices jumped roughly 3 percent on Monday, with Brent crude pushing past the $90 mark as the conflict between the US and Iran continued to intensify. The US confirmed it had completed a ninth consecutive night of strikes against Iran, this after earlier announcing that at least two American military personnel had been killed in Jordan, while US allies across the region reported additional Iranian attacks over the weekend.

This kind of sustained oil price surge tends to ripple quickly through inflation expectations, and that’s exactly what appears to be happening now. Rising fuel costs feed directly into broader consumer price pressures, which in turn shape how central banks think about interest rate policy.

Fed Officials Grow More Vocal on Rate Hikes

Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack added her voice to a growing chorus within the Federal Reserve arguing that interest rates may need to move higher to bring persistent inflation back under control. That stance sets up what looks like an increasingly charged debate heading into the Fed’s next policy meeting, and raises the possibility of visible dissent at what would be Chairman Kevin Warsh’s second meeting at the helm of the central bank.

Adding a layer of complexity to the picture, US consumer sentiment actually climbed to a five-month high in July. Analysts caution, though, that this improvement is likely to prove temporary, given that the renewed conflict in the Middle East is already pushing gasoline prices higher, a trend that tends to weigh on consumer confidence fairly quickly once it starts showing up at the pump.

Why Rate Hikes Hurt Gold

The connection between rising interest rates and falling gold prices comes down to a fairly straightforward dynamic: higher rates increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold. When interest-bearing investments offer more attractive returns, gold, which generates no yield of its own, becomes comparatively less appealing to investors, putting downward pressure on its price even during periods of geopolitical uncertainty when gold might otherwise be expected to benefit from safe-haven demand.

A Mixed Picture in Positioning and Demand

Despite the recent price weakness, speculative positioning in gold hasn’t necessarily turned bearish. According to CFTC data, COMEX gold speculators actually increased their net long position by 4,294 contracts to 119,147 in the week ending July 14, suggesting that at least some market participants remain optimistic about gold’s medium-term prospects even amid the current pullback.

Physical demand, meanwhile, has been telling a somewhat different story. Gold discounts in India widened last week to a one-month high, driven by weak jewellery demand and buyers holding out in hopes of lower prices. In China, premiums stayed largely steady, reflecting generally muted retail demand in what’s typically one of the world’s largest gold consumer markets.

Other Metals Move in the Opposite Direction

While gold slipped, other precious metals posted gains. Spot silver rose 0.9 percent to $56.42 per ounce, platinum edged up 0.1 percent to $1,592.97, and palladium gained 0.3 percent to reach $1,251.74, a reminder that even within the broader precious metals complex, price movements aren’t always uniform.

Asian Markets Stay Cautious

Beyond the gold and oil story, Asian share markets showed hesitation on Monday as investors braced for a packed week of major tech earnings that’s expected to further test market confidence in the ongoing AI-driven rally that’s underpinned much of this year’s equity gains.

What This Means for Pakistan

For Pakistani consumers and investors, these global market shifts carry direct relevance. Gold prices in Pakistan have already seen notable volatility recently, including a reported drop of Rs3,600 per tola, and any sustained decline in international gold prices tends to filter through fairly quickly to local bullion markets. At the same time, the rise in oil prices adds further pressure on Pakistan’s import bill and foreign exchange reserves, compounding challenges the country is already navigating amid its broader external financing constraints.

Looking Ahead

With the US-Iran conflict showing no clear signs of de-escalating and Fed officials increasingly vocal about the need for tighter monetary policy, both gold and broader financial markets appear set for continued volatility in the days ahead. Investors will likely be watching closely for further developments in the Middle East, upcoming tech earnings reports, and any additional signals from the Federal Reserve about the direction of interest rate policy, all factors that could meaningfully shape how gold, oil, and broader global markets move through the rest of the week.
