Dense fog enveloped Multan on Friday morning, forcing a delay in the toss for the first Test match between Pakistan and the West Indies at the Multan Cricket Stadium. Poor visibility caused by thick fog and elevated pollution levels has made conditions unplayable, prompting multiple inspections by match officials.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued a statement saying, “The visibility has been affected due to fog, so the toss has been delayed. Once the visibility improves, the two umpires will inspect the conditions again.”
The city of Multan is no stranger to winter smog, which combines fog with high levels of air pollution, creating hazardous conditions. Monitoring site IQAir reported “unhealthy for sensitive groups” air quality levels early Friday morning, with forecasts suggesting worsening conditions as the day progresses.
World Test Championship Context
This Test match is a crucial part of the ongoing 2023-2025 ICC World Test Championship cycle. Pakistan is currently placed eighth on the points table, while the West Indies hold the last position. The second Test of the series is also scheduled to take place in Multan, starting January 25.
Pakistan’s Playing XI Features a Debutant
Despite the fog-related delays, the PCB had already announced Pakistan’s playing XI for the match on Thursday. Notably, the lineup includes Muhammad Huraira, a debutant who earned his spot after impressive performances in domestic cricket and a strong showing in a recent practice match against the West Indies. Huraira will open the innings alongside captain Shan Masood, replacing the injured Saim Ayub.
Pakistan’s middle order is bolstered by star batter Babar Azam, along with Kamran Ghulam, Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Rizwan, and Salman Ali Agha. The team has opted for a spin-heavy bowling attack, featuring Sajid Khan, Noman Ali, and Abrar Ahmed. The pace responsibilities rest solely on Khurram Shahzad.
