PARIS: FIFA expressed confidence on Wednesday that all 16 host cities for the 2026 World Cup will be prepared to host matches successfully, following comments from US President Donald Trump suggesting some games could be relocated for security reasons.

A FIFA spokesperson emphasized that “safety and security are the top priorities at all FIFA events,” while clarifying that these matters fall under the jurisdiction of national governments. “We hope every one of our 16 host cities will be ready to successfully host and fulfil all necessary requirements,” the spokesperson said.

Trump, speaking on Tuesday, claimed FIFA President Gianni Infantino would support moving matches from US cities if security concerns arose. He specifically mentioned Boston — one of the 11 US host cities — as an example, adding that Infantino “would do it very easily” if requested.

The US, along with Mexico and Canada, is jointly hosting the expanded 48-team tournament from June 11 to July 19, 2026. The United States will host the majority of games, with Boston set for seven matches, Los Angeles for eight, and San Francisco and Seattle for six each.

Trump also hinted that similar relocations could apply to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics if security issues persist. His administration has previously deployed National Guard troops to Democratic-led cities, citing public safety concerns.

FIFA’s assurance seeks to calm speculation about possible venue changes, reaffirming that all preparations remain on track for the largest World Cup in history.
