Australia has unveiled its 15-member squad for the first Ashes Test against England, set to begin on November 21 at Optus Stadium in Perth, marking a significant shake-up to their batting lineup. The most notable change is the omission of young opener Sam Konstas, who has been replaced by Jake Weatherald, the in-form South Australian left-hander making his long-awaited Test debut.

Weatherald’s inclusion comes on the back of a stellar domestic season, where he consistently delivered match-winning performances in the Sheffield Shield. Chief selector George Bailey said the decision was based on “form and adaptability,” highlighting Weatherald’s strong temperament and aggressive approach at the top of the order — qualities Australia hopes will counter England’s fiery bowling attack.

In another major update, Marnus Labuschagne returns to the side after missing the previous series due to injury, bolstering Australia’s middle order. However, captain Pat Cummins will miss the opening Test due to a minor back strain, with Steve Smith stepping in as stand-in skipper. This will mark Smith’s first time leading Australia in a home Ashes Test since 2017.

The rest of the squad have the same names as Usman Khawaja, Travis Head, and all-rounder Cameron Green. Fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Scott Boland will lead the pace attack, supported by spinner Nathan Lyon, who returns from injury and is set to play a crucial role in the Perth conditions.

Selectors noted that squad depth and balance were key priorities, especially given the tight Ashes schedule. “We’re confident this squad can deliver under pressure and adapt to the conditions,” Bailey added.

Australia’s refreshed lineup signals a strategic shift toward a mix of experience and new energy, aiming to reclaim the Ashes after England’s dominant home series win in 2023.
