Islamabad – 3 May 2025:
Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan on Saturday directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) to accelerate the pace of development projects by implementing a comprehensive overhaul of its operational framework and conducting biannual reviews of terms and conditions.
Chairing a high-level meeting at the NHA headquarters, the minister carried out an in-depth review of ongoing and upcoming road infrastructure projects across Pakistan. He emphasized the urgent need for a strategic transformation within the authority to ensure efficient and timely delivery of public infrastructure.
“A fundamental change in the NHA’s system is vital. Without accountability and structured monitoring, progress will remain stagnant,” Mr Khan remarked.
Focus on the N-25 Project:
Special attention was given to the N-25 highway project, which connects Karachi to Chaman via Quetta. Termed a critical economic artery in the western corridor, the N-25 has faced prolonged delays. Mr Khan instructed that this project be prioritized for early completion, recognizing its importance for regional connectivity and economic integration.
Nationwide Infrastructure Review:
Projects in Sindh, Balochistan, and the broader western region were also reviewed. The minister highlighted the strategic importance of these areas, urging for rapid implementation to close long-standing infrastructure gaps, especially in underdeveloped regions.
Beautification & Transparency Initiatives:
In a significant move to modernize and improve the public image of the NHA, Abdul Aleem Khan directed the outsourcing of its marketing and image-building functions to professional PR and media firms. Additionally, the hiring of expert horticulture firms was ordered to ensure the beautification of highways and adjacent spaces, aiming to elevate both the functionality and aesthetics of road infrastructure.
“The development process demands not only speed but also quality and visual appeal. A reformed, responsive, and transparent system will yield better national outcomes,” Mr Khan added.
The federal secretary for communications and the chairman of NHA have been assigned to oversee the implementation of these directives and ensure compliance within clearly defined timelines.
