Alarming Concerns Arise as Al-Aqsa Hospital Faces Total Blackout, Putting Newborns at Risk

Doctors at Al-Aqsa Hospital in central Gaza are raising urgent alarms as the facility grapples with a debilitating power outage, placing the lives of vulnerable patients, particularly newborns, in imminent peril.

Expressing grave concerns, a doctor at the hospital emphasized the critical situation, stating, “This is a threat to the lives of many patients and newborns. We are striving to work with the limited resources available, but the prospect of a complete halt in operations looms large due to the absence of electricity.”

Facing a total blackout, medical professionals at the facility find themselves severely handicapped in providing necessary care. One doctor, among the dwindling staff, shared the challenges of using the flash on her phone to attend to critical cases, including over a dozen infants.

“We are doing our best to cope, even scrambling to find blankets for the children and babies. Malnutrition is a pressing concern, and their vulnerability to illness, and even potential fatalities, is a looming threat,” the doctor told Al Jazeera.

The dire situation underscores the urgent need for immediate intervention to restore power to the hospital, ensuring the continuity of essential medical services and safeguarding the lives of the most fragile patients in their care.
