At the absolute operational center of this growing threat is the strategic use of AI by cybercriminals. Kaspersky’s Global Research & Analysis Team (GReAT) revealed that threat actors are actively utilizing large language models to generate phishing emails, write malicious code, and support operational content. Notably, AI-assisted malware development has been observed in campaigns linked to groups like Funk Sec, which deployed Rust-based malware designed for data theft, encryption, and process manipulation.
Vulnerability Metrics and Regional Data
According to the firm’s telemetry for the first half of 2026, web-based threats exploiting vulnerabilities in websites and emails continued to affect millions across the META region. Turkiye recorded the highest percentage of users affected by web-based threats at 22.8%, followed by Kenya (21.2%) and Qatar (19.3%). Conversely, Pakistan—where 12.2% of Kaspersky users had online threats blocked by the firm’s solutions—joined Saudi Arabia and Jordan in registering the lowest share of users targeted by web-borne attacks in the region.
