Sindh Government Launches Massive Solar Home System Project for 275,000 Households
KARACHI — In a major initiative to address energy poverty and rising electricity bills, the Sindh Government has officially launched its landmark Solar Home Systems (SHS) Project. The initiative, valued at Rs. 18.2 billion, aims to provide clean and reliable solar power to 275,000 low-income households across the province.
The project was announced under the directives of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari as part of the provincial government’s renewable energy and social welfare roadmap.
Key Highlights of the Initiative
Divided Distribution Strategy: Out of the 275,000 total systems, 132,000 off-grid solar packages will be distributed in remote areas with no access to the national grid, while 143,000 on-grid packages will target needy families in grid-connected regions.
Complete Home Solar Kits: Beneficiaries receive a full kit, which includes solar panels, a charge controller/inverter unit, battery storage, and energy-efficient LED light bulbs to ensure immediate utility.
Targeted Poverty Relief: Implemented with support from local support organizations like the Sindh Rural Support Organisation (SRSO), the selection process prioritizes low-income families to directly lighten their monthly utility expenses.

Promoting Green Energy: By shifting a quarter of a million households toward clean energy, the Sindh government hopes to reduce reliance on fossil-fuel power plants and lower grid congestion during peak summer heatwaves.
Subsidized Financing Pipeline: In addition to free kit distribution for underprivileged families, the provincial government is preparing a subsidized solar financing model to help middle-income households afford rooftop installations.
