KARACHI — In a major step toward modernizing the provincial transit network, the Sindh government has announced plans to expand its public transport fleet by adding 50 double-decker buses and 500 new electric vehicles (EVs).
The decision was finalized during a high-level strategic review meeting chaired by Sindh Senior Minister for Transport and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon. The session focused on upgrading urban infrastructure, enhancing eco-friendly mobility solutions, and tackling growing city traffic congestion.
Key Highlights of the Transport Expansion
Massive Fleet Expansion: The addition of 550 new vehicles aims to significantly increase passenger capacity across major urban hubs, particularly in Karachi and Hyderabad.
Double-Decker Revival: The introduction of 50 double-decker buses marks a high-capacity push to optimize commuter flow on Sindh’s most heavily populated routes.
Green Transit Commitment: The 500 new EV buses will join the province’s growing green energy fleet, supporting low-emission, environmentally sustainable public transport.
Infrastructure and Depot Planning
To support the massive influx of new vehicles, Minister Memon directed deputy commissioners from various districts to quickly identify vacant government land. These designated areas will be utilized to construct modern bus depots and dedicated parking facilities for the upcoming mass transit fleet.
The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including:
Transport Secretary Asad Zamin
Karachi Development Authority (KDA) Director General Asif Jan Siddiqui
Regional deputy commissioners and infrastructure planning teams
The Bigger Picture
The initiative aligns with the Sindh government’s broader economic and environmental objectives. Over Rs 100 billion has been allocated in the current provincial budget for Karachi’s infrastructure development, focusing heavily on roads, drainage, and transport.
Minister’s Vision: “The Sindh government remains firmly committed to providing citizens with safe, comfortable, and dignified public transport. We are working diligently to bring these new eco-friendly and high-capacity buses into service as soon as possible,” stated Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.
The project is expected to create new employment opportunities across operational, maintenance, and administrative sectors while drastically reducing travel times for hundreds of thousands of daily commuters.
