Islamabad United has officially named Luke Ronchi as their new head coach ahead of the upcoming HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) season. Ronchi, a former New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter, returns to the franchise in a leadership capacity following a successful playing career with the team.

Ronchi’s Impact as a Player

Recognized as one of the most influential overseas players in PSL history, Ronchi was a fan favourite and played a crucial role in some of Islamabad United’s most memorable campaigns. He is credited with introducing a more aggressive batting style during the league’s early years, helping to shape the team’s identity.

Franchise’s Perspective on Appointment

Ali Naqvi, owner of Islamabad United, emphasized Ronchi’s deep connection with the franchise. He described Ronchi as “Islamabad United through and through” and highlighted his unique bond with the team. Naqvi noted that Ronchi’s understanding of the franchise’s culture and values made him the perfect candidate for the head coach role.

Ronchi’s Vision as Head Coach

Expressing his enthusiasm, Ronchi said that Islamabad United has always felt like home. He spoke about the special relationship he shares with the team, its owners, fans, and the entire franchise community. Ronchi stated that he is honoured to return as head coach and is committed to upholding the team’s tradition of fearless cricket, strong character, and a winning mentality.

He also expressed eagerness to continue the franchise’s legacy by developing future leaders and match-winners within the squad.

Coaching Experience and Future Outlook

Beyond his PSL experience, Ronchi brings valuable international coaching expertise. He has been involved with New Zealand’s high-performance programs and contributed to the development of the national men’s cricket team. Islamabad United highlighted that Ronchi’s combination of global coaching experience and intimate knowledge of the PSL environment equips him well to lead the team in the upcoming season.

Continuity in Leadership Development

The appointment aligns with Islamabad United’s ongoing strategy of promoting leadership from within the franchise, often transitioning former players into key coaching and management positions.
