Pakistan is expected to announce its decision on participating in the ICC T20 World Cup within the next few days, according to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. This update comes after Bangladesh was replaced by Scotland in the tournament due to security concerns.
Discussions with Prime Minister
Following a detailed meeting in Islamabad, Naqvi informed that he had consulted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding Pakistan’s stance on the upcoming T20 World Cup, which is set to be hosted by India. The chairman briefed the prime minister on recent developments involving the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Bangladesh Cricket Board, and the wider implications for Pakistan cricket.
Prime Minister Sharif instructed that the matter be resolved after thoroughly considering all options. Both parties agreed that a final decision would be reached by Friday or early next week, most likely on Monday.
Concerns Over ICC’s Handling of Security Issues
Naqvi described the meeting as positive and constructive, emphasizing that national interests are being carefully reviewed. He highlighted inconsistencies in the ICC’s approach, noting that India had previously refused to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy over security concerns, which led to matches being relocated. Conversely, when Bangladesh raised security concerns about playing in India, they were not offered a neutral venue and were instead removed from the tournament.
Following this, the ICC officially confirmed Bangladesh’s exclusion and named Scotland as their replacement.
Financial and Commercial Implications
Naqvi also mentioned that if Pakistan opts out of the tournament, it would forfeit its participation fee. However, he pointed out that India would face greater financial and commercial losses if a match between the two cricketing rivals does not take place.
Tournament Details
The ICC T20 World Cup is scheduled to commence on February 7. Although India is the official host, Pakistan’s matches are planned to be played in Sri Lanka.
