US President Donald Trump has returned to the United States after a series of significant meetings during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. His visit included discussions on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, defense arrangements concerning Greenland, and the launch of a new international peace initiative.

Ukraine Conflict Talks Progress

Following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Davos, President Trump acknowledged that there remains “a ways to go” before the war with Russia concludes. Concurrently, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with a US delegation in Moscow, emphasizing that a “long-term settlement” would require resolving territorial disputes first, as stated by Kremlin officials.

In addition, a trilateral meeting involving Ukrainian, Russian, and US representatives was scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi, led on the Russian side by Admiral Igor Kostyukov. These talks aim to further diplomatic efforts toward ending the conflict.

Greenland Defense Negotiations

President Trump indicated that current negotiations grant the United States “total access” for defense purposes in Greenland. Although an understanding was reportedly reached with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, no formal agreement has yet been finalized. Trump also suggested that the US could exercise considerable freedom regarding Greenland’s territory under the pending deal, with further details expected in the coming weeks.

European Union leaders held an emergency summit to address the situation, emphasizing the importance of managing international relations with respect and seeking constructive engagement with the US. The EU also plans increased investment in Greenland, including enhanced security measures.

Introduction of the Board of Peace

At Davos, President Trump unveiled the “Board of Peace,” a body designed to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza and address global conflicts. The board offers permanent membership for a contribution of $1 billion. Russian President Putin has been invited to join and has discussed the possibility of using some previously frozen Russian assets to finance this participation, contingent upon a peace treaty with Ukraine.

However, Trump later withdrew an invitation extended to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to join the board. The initiative’s charter has expanded beyond Gaza to encompass broader conflict resolution efforts worldwide.

Additional Foreign Policy Updates

  • Trump revealed a significant US military convoy is en route to the Middle East as a precautionary measure amid tensions with Iran, though he expressed a preference to avoid conflict.
  • He also spoke with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, while maintaining support for the acting Venezuelan president following the US-led capture of Nicolás Maduro.
  • Trump suggested he might continue as chairman of the Board of Peace beyond his presidential terms, potentially for life, depending on his decision.

Return to the United States

President Trump landed at Joint Base Andrews late Thursday evening and proceeded to the White House shortly thereafter, concluding his diplomatic engagements in Europe.
