Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has announced a new gas discovery at its Bilitang-1 exploratory well, situated in the Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The discovery was made in the Lockhart formation, marking a significant milestone in the region’s energy exploration efforts.
Details of the Discovery
The announcement was made through a notice submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). The discovery was achieved under the TAL Joint Venture, which includes several partners with varying working interests: MOL Pakistan Oil & Gas Co. B.V. as the operator holding 10%, Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) with 30%, Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) at 30%, Pakistan Oilfields Limited (POL) with 25%, and Government Holdings Private Limited (GHPL) holding 5%.
Well Drilling and Testing
The Bilitang-1 well was spudded-in on August 10, 2025, and successfully reached a target depth of 4,011 meters True Vertical Depth (TVD). Based on the interpretation of Logging While Drilling (LWD) and wireline logs data, the Lockhart formation was tested and produced gas at a rate of 1.37 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) using a 32/64-inch choke. The wellhead flowing pressure (WHFP) during the test was recorded at 254 pounds per square inch (psi).
Implications for Future Exploration
PPL stated that this discovery reduces the risks associated with further exploration in the TAL Block and opens up new opportunities for additional resource development in the area.
