Imran Khan Case

A special court in Adiala Jail hands 17-year prison sentences to Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi over undeclared gifts from Saudi Arabia.

Presided over by Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand, the court delivered the verdict after reviewing evidence and prosecution arguments. Bushra Bibi received a 10-year sentence under Section 409 and an additional 7 years under Sections 5, 2, and 47 of the relevant law. Imran Khan received the same sentence structure, resulting in a total of 17 years each.

The Toshakhana 2 case involves gifts valued at approximately €38 million (around Rs71.5 million) received during Khan’s premiership, which the prosecution claimed were not properly submitted to relevant departments as required by the 2018 Toshakhana rules. This led to an alleged loss of Rs35.28 million to the national exchequer. Among the items in question was a jewelry set gifted to Bushra Bibi during a Saudi Arabia visit in May 2021, including a ring, bracelet, necklace, and earrings.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed the case in August 2022 after a 37-day investigation. The couple was formally indicted in December 2024, and their pleas for acquittal were rejected by the special Islamabad court.

This verdict is separate from the first Toshakhana case, in which Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were sentenced to 14 years in prison and fined Rs1.57 billion collectively. That earlier sentence had been suspended by the Islamabad High Court in April 2024.

The court’s decision in Toshakhana 2 adds significant legal pressure on the former Prime Minister and his spouse, reflecting continued accountability proceedings against political leaders in Pakistan.
