Indian cricketer and ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been hospitalised in Sydney after sustaining a lacerated spleen during the third One-Day International (ODI) against Australia. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the development on Monday, stating that Iyer is “medically stable and recovering under expert supervision.”

The 30-year-old suffered the injury while taking a backpedalling catch to dismiss Alex Carey, a crucial moment in the match that India went on to win by nine wickets. However, despite the victory, India lost the overall three-match series 1–2, having been defeated in the first two ODIs in Perth and Adelaide.

According to the BCCI, Iyer experienced severe pain in his left lower rib cage area following the catch and was immediately taken off the field for medical assessment. Subsequent scans revealed a laceration to his spleen, prompting doctors to admit him for further evaluation and treatment.

Iyer remains under close observation in a Sydney hospital, where the BCCI medical team is coordinating with local Australian specialists to ensure his complete recovery. The statement added that Iyer’s condition is stable, but he will require an extended period of rest before returning to professional cricket.

The injury has ruled Iyer out of the upcoming five-match T20 series between India and Australia, scheduled to begin on October 29, as he was not part of the T20 squad. His return for India’s next ODI series against South Africa, starting November 30, remains uncertain and will depend on his recovery progress.

Shreyas Iyer, known for his consistency and composure in the middle order, has scored 2,917 runs in 73 ODIs at an impressive average of 47.81. His absence could be a major setback for India ahead of a busy international schedule.
