Pakistan tightened their grip in the second Test against South Africa in Rawalpindi as captain Shan Masood led from the front with a superb knock of 87 runs, guiding his side to a strong 259-5 at stumps on Day 1.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Pakistan’s top order displayed confidence and discipline. Abdullah Shafique added a crucial 57 runs, while Saud Shakeel remained unbeaten on 42, helping the hosts recover from early pressure. Shan Masood’s commanding innings was the backbone of Pakistan’s performance, showing patience and aggression in equal measure.

South Africa, however, struggled to maintain momentum. Several dropped catches and fielding errors proved costly, allowing Pakistan’s batters to rebuild partnerships and take full advantage of the Rawalpindi pitch. The Proteas’ bowling unit — led by Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj — created chances but failed to capitalize when it mattered most.

With Pakistan already 1-0 up in the two-match series after their 93-run victory in the first Test, the hosts are in a strong position to seal a 2-0 series win and make a confident start to their World Test Championship campaign.

As the pitch begins to wear, Pakistan’s spinners are expected to play a major role in the coming days. The pressure now rests on South Africa’s batting lineup to respond effectively and stay alive in the series.
