Imad Wasim’s first match as Antigua and Barbuda Falcons captain ends in defeat to Patriots in CPL 2025 opener

BASSETERRE: Imad Wasim’s much-anticipated debut as captain of the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025 ended in disappointment as his side fell to the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the tournament’s opening match.

Taking over the captaincy, Imad faced a formidable Patriots lineup featuring big names such as Jason Holder and Naseem Shah. Despite boasting a well-balanced squad, the Falcons struggled to find momentum throughout the match and failed to produce a winning performance.

Imad, a seasoned all-rounder with prior CPL experience, now shoulders the dual responsibility of performing on the field and managing the strategic and motivational aspects of leadership. Captaining in the high-pressure T20 format demands sharp tactical decisions, quick thinking, and the ability to inspire players under shifting match conditions.

The Falcons, led by a mix of seasoned internationals like Shakib Al Hasan and promising youngsters such as Jayden Seales, showed flashes of potential. However, the team’s inability to adapt to key turning points in the match proved costly. The Patriots capitalized on these moments with a more cohesive and coordinated performance, securing victory.

In his post-match comments, the 36-year-old Imad stressed that success in T20 cricket depends on unity and coordination rather than individual brilliance. He acknowledged that the team needs to work on responding better to changing match scenarios, particularly in bowling rotations and field adjustments.

While the defeat is a setback, it also serves as a crucial learning experience early in the CPL season. Imad’s calm demeanor and deep cricketing knowledge remain assets, and as the tournament progresses, his challenge will be to translate these qualities into tactical advantages that can swing tight matches in the Falcons’ favor.
