Islamabad, August 4, 2025 — In a significant boost to regional cooperation and bilateral engagement, Pakistan and Iran signed 12 agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) during Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian’s official visit to Pakistan. The high-level visit, marked by warmth and symbolism, saw both countries reaffirming their shared commitment to regional connectivity, economic collaboration, and mutual solidarity.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed President Pezeshkian at the PM House in Islamabad, where both leaders witnessed the exchange of MoUs covering a wide array of sectors, including trade, technology, transportation, tourism, plant protection, air services, and judicial cooperation.

Key highlights of the agreements include:

  • Modernisation of the Quetta-Zahedan road.
  • Cooperation in meteorology, ICT, maritime safety, and plant quarantine.
  • Cultural and youth exchange programmes.
  • A joint statement on intent to finalise a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
  • Review and upgrade of the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul railway and the Quetta-Zahedan rail link.

The two sides also agreed to enhance trade volume to $10 billion, with Iranian ministers expressing interest in joining the Silk Road initiative alongside Pakistan and China, and expanding maritime trade via Gwadar and Chabahar ports.

During a separate bilateral meeting, Iranian Minister for Roads and Urban Development Farzaneh Sadegh and Pakistani federal ministers—Abdul Aleem Khan, Jam Kamal Khan, and Hanif Abbasi—delved into transport, trade, and infrastructure cooperation. Minister Aleem Khan congratulated Iran on its resilience and praised the historic solidarity between the two nations.

The Iranian delegation expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s support against Israeli aggression and reiterated the importance of increasing cross-border movement and upgrading transport networks. Working groups will be formed to accelerate implementation of these projects.

President Pezeshkian also met President Asif Ali Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr, where the two leaders expressed mutual resolve to deepen cooperation across all sectors and jointly promote regional peace.

In a symbolic gesture, the Iranian President planted a commemorative sapling at the PM House and extended an invitation to PM Shehbaz to visit Iran soon to continue diplomatic momentum.
