PM Shehbaz Meets Azerbaijan’s President at ECO Summit, Thanks for Support During Conflict with India
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan on the sidelines of the 17th Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) Summit held in Khankendi, Azerbaijan, on July 4, 2025. The high-level meeting marked another milestone in the growing diplomatic, economic, and strategic partnership between the two brotherly nations.
During the meeting, PM Shehbaz expressed deep gratitude to President Aliyev for Azerbaijan’s steadfast diplomatic support to Pakistan during its recent tensions with India, particularly on the Kashmir issue. The premier emphasized that Pakistan also stood by Azerbaijan during its critical times, reaffirming the strong bond of mutual solidarity and trust between the two countries.
Both leaders discussed ways to further deepen bilateral cooperation, especially in trade, energy, and investment. They welcomed the progress made in identifying new avenues for economic collaboration and agreed to continue working closely to realize the full potential of Pakistan-Azerbaijan ties.
The Pakistani prime minister congratulated the Azerbaijani president on successfully hosting the ECO Summit, held under the theme “New ECO Vision for a Sustainable and Climate Resilient Future.” He also expressed appreciation for the warm hospitality extended to his delegation during their earlier visit to Lachin from May 27 to 29.
PM Shehbaz was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant to the PM Tariq Fatemi.
At the ECO Summit, PM Shehbaz is leading the Pakistani delegation and is expected to deliver a key address highlighting Pakistan’s stance on regional and global challenges, including climate change, economic cooperation, and connectivity. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the ECO Vision 2025 and stressed the need for enhanced intra-regional trade, transport infrastructure, energy collaboration, and sustainable development.
In a cordial gesture, PM Shehbaz reiterated his official invitation to President Aliyev to visit Pakistan at the earliest convenience — a move seen as a further step toward solidifying Pakistan-Azerbaijan ties.
