The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday appointed former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood as the interim head coach of the men’s national red-ball (Test) team. The decision comes as part of a transitional phase in the coaching setup, with Mahmood stepping into the role under a short-term contract.

In a press release, the PCB stated that Azhar’s appointment is based on his prior contributions as assistant head coach, his rapport with players, and his deep understanding of the team’s current environment.

“Azhar Mahmood’s presence will be valuable given his vast international and coaching experience,” read the PCB statement. “His prior involvement with the team allows for continuity and will help maintain stability in the dressing room.”

Azhar Mahmood, who represented Pakistan in 21 Test matches and 143 ODIs between 1996 and 2007, brings with him a wealth of experience. He has also served as Pakistan’s bowling coach and worked with teams in various T20 leagues around the world, gaining a reputation as a technically sound and player-friendly mentor.

Sources inside the PCB have indicated that this is a temporary assignment, and a decision on the permanent red-ball head coach will be taken following a comprehensive review and evaluation process.

The move comes as Pakistan gears up for upcoming Test series and looks to rebuild its red-ball structure with a focus on consistency, leadership, and tactical acumen.
