The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially unveiled the prize money pool for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) 2023–25 Final, scheduled to take place at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London from June 11, 2025. The summit clash will feature South Africa and Australia, two cricketing powerhouses, vying for the coveted ICC Test title and a record-breaking purse of USD $5.76 million.

Record Prize Pool Announced

The total prize fund for the final stands at USD $5.76 million, more than double the amount awarded in previous editions. The winners will receive USD $3.6 million, a steep rise from the $1.6 million awarded in both the 2021 and 2023 finals. Meanwhile, the runners-up will take home USD $2.16 million, up from $800,000 previously.

This move by the ICC reflects the growing importance and popularity of Test cricket and the World Test Championship format.

30-Day Countdown Launched

To mark the 30-day countdown to the final, the ICC released a promotional video featuring prominent current and former players. South Africa’s Temba Bavuma, Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram, and Australia’s Steve Smith and Travis Head were joined by legends such as Shaun Pollock, Dale Steyn, Matthew Hayden, Mel Jones, Nasser Hussain, Shoaib Akhtar, and Ravi Shastri to build anticipation.

Road to the Final

  • South Africa secured their spot in the final with a strong showing, topping the WTC25 standings. Their path included series wins against Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, and a drawn series at home with India.
  • Australia qualified with a 3-1 series win over India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, along with clean sweeps over Pakistan at home and series victories in New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

Reactions from ICC and Captains

ICC Chair Jay Shah praised the competitiveness of the tournament, saying:

“The championship has showcased remarkable performances from players of different teams, culminating in a final between these two exceptional squads — a true celebration of cricket.”

South Africa’s captain Temba Bavuma expressed confidence and ambition:

“It’s a good opportunity for us to win an ICC title. Lord’s is a fitting venue for this mega fixture and all of us will be out there trying to give our best against Australia.”

Australia’s captain Pat Cummins emphasized the honor of defending the title:

“It’s a great honor for all of us. We look forward to the challenge South Africa will present at the home of cricket.”

A Historic Battle Awaits

As the only team to reach consecutive WTC Finals, Australia seeks to become the first-ever two-time WTC champions, while South Africa aims to end their wait for an ICC title. The stage is set for a thrilling five-day encounter at one of cricket’s most iconic venues — Lord’s.
