Mike Hesson leads race for Pakistan's head coach as PCB prepares for Bangladesh T20I series; final announcement expected after May 4

Lahore, April 29, 2025 – The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is in the final stages of its consultation process to appoint a new head coach for the national team, with the official announcement expected shortly after May 4, according to sources close to the board.

Among the top contenders, New Zealand’s Mike Hesson has reportedly emerged as a leading candidate. Hesson, who is currently serving as the head coach of Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), is being seriously considered to lead Pakistan’s white-ball (limited-overs) squads, including both T20 and ODI formats.

The PCB is expected to close the application window soon before finalizing the appointment. The decision follows a period of restructuring and focus on improving Pakistan’s performance in the shorter formats ahead of key international fixtures.

The first major assignment for the new head coach is likely to be the T20I series against Bangladesh, scheduled to begin later in May. The five-match series will include three games in Lahore and two in Faisalabad, with the Bangladesh team expected to arrive in Pakistan on May 21.

In parallel with the coaching decision, the PCB is also eyeing fresh talent for the squad. Sources suggest the inclusion of several in-form domestic players including Sahibzada Farhan, Hussain Talat, Hasan Ali, Faheem Ashraf, and Ali Raza for the Bangladesh series.

The appointment of a new coach comes at a crucial time, with Pakistan aiming to strengthen its preparation for upcoming international tournaments, including the ICC T20 World Cup.
