In a display of solidarity with the people of Gaza, traders across Karachi have gone on strike, resulting in the closure of major commercial hubs across the city on [date]. Retail and wholesale markets, including Saddar, Old City Area, Hyderi, Liaquatabad, Tariq Road, and the Sarafa Bazaar, remain shut as part of the protest.
The Karachi Traders Alliance, along with various trader associations, has called for the public’s support in making this strike a success. The shutdown comes as a symbolic act of unity with the Palestinian cause, particularly in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Rizwan Irfan, President of the Electronics Markets, confirmed that all electronics markets across the city would remain closed. He emphasized that the strike was not just a business-related decision but a show of solidarity for the people of Gaza. “This is a symbolic gesture to show we stand with the people of Gaza,” Irfan said.
Jameel Paracha, a leader of the Karachi Traders Alliance, further stated, “The business community stands with the people of Gaza,” urging citizens to support the strike.
Wholesale markets, including the Jodia Bazaar, have also joined the shutdown. Muhammad Aslam, the General Secretary of the Jodia Bazaar Medicine Market, confirmed that their market would be fully closed for the day. In addition, the Shershah Scrap Market, under the leadership of Malik Zahid, is also observing a complete shutdown.
Markets on Tariq Road are not left out, with the Tariq Road Traders Alliance announcing a protest in support of Gaza. Protest camps against Israel’s actions are also expected to be set up around key commercial districts.
