Former Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq is set to take over as the head coach of the national cricket team, sources confirmed on Saturday.

According to insiders within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Saqlain has accepted the coaching role after a meeting with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. His appointment comes at a crucial juncture as the team prepares for the upcoming tour of New Zealand.

Saqlain, who has previously served as Pakistan’s head coach, was initially approached by the board before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. However, at that time, he reportedly turned down the offer due to concerns regarding all-rounder Shadab Khan.

With Pakistan cricket facing challenges and seeking stability ahead of key international fixtures, his return is expected to bring experience and expertise to the squad. Known for his tactical acumen and deep understanding of spin bowling, Saqlain could play a pivotal role in strengthening the team’s performance.

The PCB is yet to make an official announcement, but sources suggest the decision has been finalized, and an official confirmation could be imminent.

Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand, scheduled from March 16 to April 5, features five T20Is and three ODIs. If confirmed, Saqlain Mushtaq will have a short window to prepare the squad for this crucial series.
