The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to make history by becoming the first country in the world to use artificial intelligence (AI)-powered drones to assist in sighting the Ramadan crescent moon, the UAE Council for Fatwa announced on Friday.

This groundbreaking technological innovation marks a significant step in integrating modern science with traditional Islamic practices, ensuring greater accuracy in determining the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

Historic Moon Sighting Using AI Drones

The UAE has urged all Muslims in the country to observe the crescent moon on the evening of Friday, February 28, corresponding to 29 Shaban in the Umm Al Qura calendar.

The UAE Council for Fatwa emphasized that moon sighting via drones will be considered an extension of direct vision, in line with the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH):

“Do not fast until you see the crescent moon, and do not break your fast until you see it. If it is obscured from you, estimate it.”

While this innovative method will assist in the moon sighting process, the UAE will also continue its traditional practices, including:

  • Naked-eye observation
  • Use of high-tech astronomical observatories

These observatories are operated in coordination with national institutions, specialized centers, and astronomical bodies to confirm the official start of Ramadan.

When Will Ramadan Begin?

If the crescent moon is spotted on Friday evening after Maghrib prayer, then Ramadan will begin on March 1. If not, the holy month will start on March 2.

The International Astronomy Centre has predicted that Ramadan is most likely to commence on March 1.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has also urged Muslims in the Kingdom to observe the crescent moon on the same evening, following its own moon sighting traditions.

Ramadan Working Hours in the UAE

In line with Ramadan traditions, the UAE’s Federal Authority for Government Human Resources has announced reduced working hours for government employees. Additionally, the private sector will also have two hours of reduced working time daily throughout the holy month.

Spiritual & Cultural Significance of Moon Sighting

The sighting of the Ramadan crescent moon holds immense spiritual and cultural significance for millions of Muslims worldwide. The confirmation of the new moon officially marks the beginning of Ramadan, a sacred month of fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection.

By integrating AI-powered drones into moon sighting, the UAE is bridging tradition with technology, ensuring that Islamic rituals evolve with modern advancements while preserving their religious authenticity.
