Legal Battle in Pakistan Cricket
Bangladesh’s spin bowling coach and former Pakistan cricketer Mushtaq Ahmed has announced a Rs 35 crore defamation lawsuit against legendary fast bowlers Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, accusing them of harassment. The legal notice, set to be issued soon, adds a new controversy to Pakistan’s cricketing landscape ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Harassment Allegations Spark Legal Action

Mushtaq Ahmed made his announcement during a video statement on a YouTube sports show, asserting that while criticism in sports analysis is expected, the remarks from Akram and Waqar had crossed a line into harassment. He revealed that his legal team would be seeking Rs 20 crore in damages from Waqar Younis and Rs 15 crore from Wasim Akram.

Despite their shared history as teammates in Pakistan’s cricketing golden era, tensions have escalated, prompting Mushtaq to seek legal action. While the specific nature of the alleged harassment remains unclear, the former leg-spinner insists on accountability for what he perceives as undue pressure and defamation.

Waqar Apologizes, Akram Stands Firm

Following Mushtaq’s announcement, Waqar Younis responded with an apology, possibly to defuse the situation. However, Wasim Akram dismissed the allegations, maintaining that he would respond through legal means if necessary.

Some observers believe the controversy stems from lighthearted exchanges, with Waqar even remarking that the dispute might add to the entertainment value of the show where the comments were made. However, whether the matter will be settled amicably or escalate into a full-fledged legal battle remains to be seen.

This incident has added an unexpected off-field drama to Pakistan cricket, overshadowing the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 clash between Pakistan and Bangladesh on February 27.
