Pakistan and Turkiye have reaffirmed their commitment to increasing bilateral trade to $5 billion, as discussed in a high-level meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Islamabad on Thursday. The leaders also participated in the Pakistan-Turkiye High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, focusing on enhancing trade, investment, and defense cooperation.

Expanding Trade and Investment

Addressing a press stakeout, President Erdogan emphasized the importance of expanding the existing trade agreement between the two countries. He announced that Turkish investors would be encouraged to participate in Pakistan’s economy, particularly through flagship projects.

Highlighting the strengthening defense ties, Erdogan noted that military dialogue and collaboration in the defense sector have significantly boosted bilateral trade and investment. He stressed the potential for joint ventures, procurement agreements, and technology transfer in defense manufacturing.

New Agreements and Economic Cooperation

Both nations signed 24 agreements, covering various sectors, including trade, industry, and strategic cooperation. President Erdogan expressed confidence that these agreements would benefit both countries and the broader region.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed Turkiye’s strong support for Pakistan, particularly in times of crisis such as natural disasters and economic challenges. He highlighted the special economic zone (SEZ) to be developed by Turkish firms, saying it would help boost industrial production and economic growth in Pakistan.

Solidarity on Kashmir and Palestine Issues

President Erdogan reaffirmed Turkiye’s unwavering support for Pakistan on Kashmir, emphasizing that his country stands in solidarity with the Kashmiri people. He reiterated Turkiye’s call for a peaceful resolution of the dispute through dialogue based on UN resolutions.

He also praised Pakistan’s steadfast stance on the Palestine issue, stating that both nations will continue advocating for an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Strengthening Pakistan-Turkiye Relations

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude for Turkiye’s consistent stance on Kashmir and its support for Pakistan during challenging times. He noted that Pakistan fully supports Turkiye on the issue of Northern Cyprus.

Sharif emphasized that the agreements and MOUs signed will be translated into actionable projects, ensuring long-term economic and strategic collaboration. He assured President Erdogan of Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and working closely to implement mutual agreements.

Following the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hosted a luncheon in honor of President Erdogan and his delegation, celebrating the growing Pakistan-Turkiye friendship.
