Karachi recorded its coldest night of the winter season as the temperature dropped to 8.5°C, according to data from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) released on Saturday. The chill in the city is attributed to the north-easterly winds that have been blowing consistently over the past few weeks.

Drop in Temperatures Across Karachi

The Met Office reported a slight but further drop in temperatures over the next 24 hours, with expectations of the mercury ranging between 8°C and 10°C. Humidity levels during the past 24 hours were measured at 25%, with light north-easterly winds prevailing throughout the city.

The lowest temperature in Karachi was recorded in Gulistan-e-Johar, where the mercury dipped to a chilly 6.5°C. Other notable readings included:

  • Jinnah Terminal and Shahrah-e-Faisal: 8.5°C
  • Maripur: 9°C
  • Bin Qasim: 9.7°C

Freezing Conditions Persist in Balochistan

Meanwhile, Balochistan continues to endure freezing temperatures, especially in its northern regions. Quetta and Ziarat recorded a minimum temperature of -6°C, while Kalat faced even harsher conditions with temperatures plummeting to -7°C.

Other areas, including Pishin, Mastung, Zhob, Qila Saifullah, and Qila Abdullah, also reported extremely cold weather. According to the PMD, most districts in Balochistan are expected to remain cold and dry, with mountainous regions experiencing prolonged periods of freezing conditions.

Outlook for Karachi and Balochistan

The PMD advises residents of Karachi to prepare for continued chilly nights and cooler daytime conditions. In Balochistan, people in mountainous regions should brace for severe cold and take precautions to mitigate the impact of the extreme weather on daily life.

This cold spell underscores the diverse and challenging winter conditions experienced across Pakistan, with coastal cities like Karachi experiencing an unusual chill while northern and mountainous areas endure freezing temperatures.
