NEW YORK – Time magazine has named US President-elect Donald Trump its “Person of the Year” for 2024, acknowledging his significant influence on American politics and the nation’s role on the global stage.

“For marshaling a comeback of historic proportions, for driving a once-in-a-generation political realignment, for reshaping the American presidency and altering America’s role in the world, Donald Trump is Time’s 2024 Person of the Year,” wrote Sam Jacobs, Time’s Editor-in-Chief, in a letter to readers.

This marks the second time Trump has received the honor, having been named “Person of the Year” in 2016 following his first presidential election victory. The magazine awarded the title to Democratic President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in 2020 and to pop icon Taylor Swift in 2023.

The latest issue of Time features an in-depth interview with Trump, conducted on November 25 at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. In the discussion, Trump criticized Ukraine’s use of US-supplied missiles in strikes deep within Russian territory. He also expressed plans for a “big discussion” on ending childhood vaccination programs with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., his nominee to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, hinting at potential vaccine policy overhauls.

To celebrate his selection, Trump rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), receiving enthusiastic cheers. He was joined by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Melania, daughters Ivanka and Tiffany, Vice President-elect JD Vance, and Scott Bessent, his pick for Treasury Secretary. Top business leaders, including Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon and Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser, also attended the ceremony.

In comments to CNBC at the NYSE, Trump reiterated his economic agenda, highlighting plans to expand domestic oil drilling and reduce corporate tax rates to 15% for US-manufactured products.

The NYSE bell ringing, a ceremonial start to the trading day, is a prestigious event historically reserved for corporate leaders celebrating milestones, though it has also featured notable figures like Ronald Reagan, Nelson Mandela, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

With this recognition, Trump joins a select group of individuals who have reshaped global narratives, reflecting Time’s acknowledgment of his enduring impact on politics and governance.
