The Rawalpindi administration has approved the launch of 102 electric buses across the city, covering an extensive 84-kilometer network, aiming to revolutionize public transport with eco-friendly alternatives.

Project Overview

The project, managed by the Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMTA), is slated for completion by November 30, 2025. With an estimated budget of over Rs7 billion, the Punjab government has allocated Rs4.7 billion for its implementation.

Eco-Friendly Public Transport

The new electric bus system will operate on 10 routes, providing Rawalpindi’s residents with a cleaner, more sustainable transportation option. In addition to the initial 102 buses, a broader plan includes the deployment of 200 electric buses across the city in the near future.

Strategic Collaboration with China

The project aligns with a recent agreement between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Chinese government to promote sustainable public transport and reduce environmental pollution. Following this, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved a cutting-edge transport initiative exclusively for Rawalpindi.

Infrastructure Development

Key infrastructure upgrades include:

  • Revamping the old GTS bus depot at Chohar Chowk to accommodate 100 buses.
  • Construction of a modern terminal with 40 electric charging stations at the Adamjee Road depot.

Planned Routes

The electric buses will operate on several key routes, enhancing connectivity across Rawalpindi:

  • Route 1: Islamabad International Airport to Railway Station via GT Road, Kohinoor Mill, and Race Course.
  • Route 2: Railway Station to Chaklala Scheme Three through Saddar and Kacheri.
  • Route 3: T-Chowk to Kacheri Chowk, passing through DHA Phase Five, Bahria Phase Seven, and Ayub Park.
  • Route 4: Adiala Jail to Metro Station Saddar, via Lal Kurti and Khawaja Corporation.

This initiative is expected to improve the city’s public transport system while contributing to environmental sustainability and reduced traffic congestion.
