Usman Riaz’s The Glassworker has made history as Pakistan’s first animated feature film to qualify for consideration at the Oscars. The visually stunning masterpiece has been longlisted for the 97th Academy Awards, competing in two prestigious categories: Best Animated Feature and Best International Feature Film.

According to reports, the film is among 31 contenders for the Best Animated Feature award, facing tough competition from major productions such as Pixar’s Inside Out 2 and DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda 4. In the International Feature Film category, it is up against 85 entries, including India’s Laapata Ladies and Palestine’s From Ground Zero, a poignant anthology on the Gaza conflict.

Set against a backdrop inspired by South Asia, The Glassworker follows the journey of Vincent, a talented young glass artisan, and his deepening relationship with Alliz, the daughter of a key client. Through intricate hand-drawn animation and a moving score, the film delicately explores themes of love, emotional growth, and the destructive impact of war.

This milestone achievement highlights Pakistan’s rising presence in the global animation industry, which, though still in its infancy, is garnering international recognition. The Glassworker has already won acclaim for its artistic brilliance and storytelling.

The competition for an Oscar remains intense, with members of the Academy evaluating entries and adhering to strict screening guidelines. The Academy will announce its shortlists on December 17, 2024, with final nominations set to be revealed on January 23, 2025.

Regardless of the final outcome, The Glassworker’s inclusion in the Oscar race is a groundbreaking moment for Pakistan’s film industry and a testament to the country’s emerging creative talent.
