ISLAMABAD – Pakistan and Sri Lanka have committed to enhancing their cooperation across various key sectors through increased dialogue, improved mechanisms, and the exploration of new opportunities in agriculture, health, connectivity, and culture. This commitment was reaffirmed during the seventh round of bilateral political consultations held in Islamabad on Tuesday.

The Sri Lankan delegation was led by Foreign Secretary Aruni Wijewardane, while the Pakistani side was headed by Foreign Secretary Muhammad Syrus Sajjad Qazi. The discussions took place in a friendly and productive atmosphere, with both sides expressing satisfaction over the positive trajectory of their bilateral relations.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

The consultations highlighted the mutual resolve to further strengthen cooperation that benefits both nations. There was a consensus on the need to enhance bilateral dialogue and exchanges, as well as to fortify the existing dialogue mechanisms. This includes regular meetings and collaborative efforts aimed at addressing mutual concerns and fostering shared interests.

Exploring New Avenues for Cooperation

Both countries identified and agreed to explore new opportunities for collaboration in several vital sectors. In agriculture, the focus will be on sharing best practices, technologies, and innovations to improve productivity and sustainability. The health sector will benefit from joint initiatives aimed at improving healthcare services, medical research, and capacity building.

Connectivity emerged as another crucial area, with discussions centered on enhancing transportation links, digital connectivity, and infrastructure development. Cultural exchanges were also emphasized, with plans to promote greater understanding and appreciation of each other’s rich cultural heritage through joint cultural programs, student exchanges, and tourism initiatives.

Shared Views on Global Issues

Pakistan and Sri Lanka acknowledged their shared views on several global issues, underscoring their common stance on matters such as climate change, sustainable development, and international peace and security. This unanimity of views serves as a foundation for their collaborative efforts on the global stage, where they aim to contribute positively to addressing pressing global challenges.

Comprehensive Assessment of Bilateral Relations

The two sides conducted a comprehensive assessment of their bilateral relations, covering a wide range of areas. Trade and economic cooperation were key topics, with discussions focusing on increasing bilateral trade, investment opportunities, and economic integration. Defense and security cooperation were also reviewed, with both countries agreeing to enhance their strategic partnership and joint efforts to combat terrorism and ensure regional stability.

In education, the emphasis was on expanding academic exchanges, research collaborations, and scholarships to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and expertise. Parliamentary exchanges were highlighted as a means to foster greater political understanding and cooperation. The discussions also covered collaboration in media, sports, and multilateral forums, aiming to strengthen people-to-people ties and promote mutual understanding.

Regional Political and Security Dynamics

The political and security dynamics in South Asia and the surrounding regions were also on the agenda. Both countries exchanged views on the current regional situation, expressing their commitment to peace, stability, and development in South Asia. They discussed the importance of regional cooperation and the need to address common challenges through dialogue and collaboration.

Conclusion

The seventh round of bilateral political consultations between Pakistan and Sri Lanka has reaffirmed the strong and enduring ties between the two countries.
