A helicopter transporting Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi and several officials reportedly experienced a “crash upon landing” in the rugged Varzaqan region of the country amidst challenging weather conditions, as per state media outlet Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA). Search and rescue operations are currently underway, but there’s no update on Raisi’s condition yet.

Among those aboard were Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, East Azerbaijan province Governor Malek Rahmati, and others. The convoy consisted of three helicopters, with the other two landing safely.

The incident took place as Raisi was returning from a visit to East Azerbaijan province, where he attended the inauguration of a dam project alongside his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, near the border of the two nations.

State TV initially reported that harsh weather conditions and heavy fog were hampering rescue teams’ efforts to reach the site of the reported helicopter crash.

Pir Hossein Kolivand, the head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS), stated to Iran’s Tasnim news agency that 40 rapid response teams from IRCS were currently engaged in search operations in the area where President Raisi’s helicopter was believed to have crashed. Kolivand acknowledged the extremely unfavorable weather conditions and challenging terrain, emphasizing that every possible effort was being made to carry out necessary actions.

He mentioned the utilization of drones and other aerial measures, though aerial search operations were hindered by the poor weather. Kolivand also noted the dispatching of additional forces from various provinces to augment personnel at the site.

Concerns Amid Hope: Helicopter Crash Details Emerge

According to an Iranian official speaking anonymously to Reuters, the helicopter carrying President Raisi and others crashed while traversing mountainous terrain. The lives of those on board are at risk, although there is still hope for their safety. However, updates from the crash site are troubling, indicating a precarious situation.

Search and Rescue Efforts Intensify

In response to the crash, Iran’s army and the elite Revolutionary Guard have mobilized all available resources for search and rescue operations. Despite challenging conditions, including darkness and rain causing muddy terrain, local teams are persisting in their efforts to reach the crash site.

National Concern and Solidarity

State TV interrupted regular programming to broadcast prayers for President Raisi, reflecting the nation’s concern. The semi-official Fars news agency urged Iranians to pray for Raisi’s well-being. Internationally, leaders such as President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed solidarity and wished for Raisi’s safety.

International Response and Support

The US State Department is closely monitoring the situation, while Azerbaijan and Azeri President Ilham Aliyev offered prayers and assistance. Additionally, Iraq has pledged support, instructing relevant bodies to aid in the search efforts.

Years of Crisis and Conflict

Raisi’s presidency has been marked by significant challenges, including social unrest and economic strain exacerbated by US sanctions. Despite efforts such as a surprise diplomatic deal with Saudi Arabia, regional tensions remain high, with recent escalations involving Israel.

Raisi’s Background and Political Landscape

Born in 1960, Raisi rose through the ranks of Iran’s judiciary, gaining prominence as a strong contender to succeed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His presidency has consolidated power among hardliners but has faced criticism for economic struggles and protests against clerical rule. Recent diplomatic efforts, including a visit to Pakistan, aim to address economic and geopolitical challenges.
