On Monday, PM Shehbaz Sharif stepped aside from the role of the party leadership. He stated it was time that his brother, Nawaz Sharif, rejoined taking back his rightful position. Nawaz Sharif had to step down from his post following his disqualification in 2018. After being dismissed as Prime minister in 2018, it was further determined that disqualification under Article 62 and 63 means that the individual can not serve as the party president. This ruling was passed by then-chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisa.

These previous cases on the previous party president were resolved by last month. Following this, Punjab president Rana Sanaullah urged him to resume his leadership role and take on the responsibilities. Further in development of this, the party held a meeting in model town, Lahore. Several PML-N leaders, such as Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Khawaja Saad Rafique, and over 109 members of the CWK from all four provinces, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan attended the meeting. The meeting was presided over by PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal and Shehbaz Sharif’s resignation was accepted. He was greatly appreciated by other party members for his efforts over the past 7 years in maintaining the party.

Amid these developments, as a result of this meeting, it was decided that Nawaz will be the final president of the Party. According to party leadership, the PML-N’s General Council will convene at 11 am on May 28. This convention is set to move forward with the election of Nawaz as president.
