The Punjab government has recently unveiled a new scheme to provide electric bikes to teachers, extending a similar initiative previously launched for students.

Under the leadership of Provincial Education Minister Sikandar Hayat, the program aims to distribute 15,000 electric two-wheelers to teachers across the province. The rollout of the e-bikes will occur in three phases, starting with an allocation of 5,000 bikes to teachers and an additional 10,000 to be distributed in later stages.

This initiative is designed to alleviate the financial burden on teachers caused by high petrol prices, providing a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly commuting option.

Education Minister Hayat expressed confidence that the shift to electric bikes would significantly reduce commuting costs for teachers and contribute positively to environmental conservation.

This development follows closely behind a related announcement by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who kicked off a campaign to equip 20,000 university students with bikes, including both electric and petrol versions. In the first phase of the student-focused initiative, the government will distribute 19,000 petrol bikes and 1,000 e-bikes. The Punjab government has committed to subsidize the interest on these bikes by Rs1 billion and to pay the initial down payment of Rs20,000 for each bike to assist the students.
