Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, daughter of former President Asif Ali Zardari, has stepped into the role of First Lady of Pakistan after being elected as a Member of the National Assembly (MNA) for the first time.
Aseefa secured victory unopposed in the Nawabshah by-election seat. Upon her arrival at the Parliament House on Tuesday, she was accorded the protocol befitting the country’s First Lady.
In the National Assembly session, NA Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq administered the oath to Aseefa Bhutto.
Traditionally, the status of First Lady is attributed to the wife of the President. However, following the tragic assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007, Asif Ali Zardari, her husband, became a widower. He did not remarry, leaving the position of First Lady vacant during his first presidential term from 2008 to 2013.
Aseefa, who was a teenager during Zardari’s initial term, is now 31 years old and assumes the responsibilities associated with the position of First Lady of Pakistan.
