Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to meet Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa today to address allegations made by Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges regarding interference by the country’s intelligence agencies in judicial matters.
Sources indicate that the prime minister will be accompanied by the attorney general and the law minister during the visit to the Supreme Court. This development follows a letter from six IHC judges to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), urging a judicial convention to discuss alleged executive interference in judicial affairs.
The letter highlighted a lack of guidance in the SJC’s code of conduct for judges on reporting incidents that undermine judicial independence. The matter was discussed during a full court meeting convened by CJP Isa in response to demands for a probe by various bar associations and senior lawyers.
Additionally, a constitutional petition has been filed in the apex court seeking an open court investigation into the IHC judges’ letter.
