China’s electric vehicle giant, BYD, took center stage at the Geneva car show by showcasing its latest creation, the Yangwang U8, a luxury plug-in hybrid SUV that boasts some remarkable features, making it stand out in the competitive automotive market.

The standout feature of the Yangwang U8 is its capability to float in the event of accidents involving water, adding an extra layer of safety and versatility to its design. Weighing approximately 3.5 metric tons, this hybrid SUV is equipped with four electric motors, one in each wheel, enabling it to park sideways like a crab and execute a complete turn on the spot.

While currently available exclusively in China, BYD is considering the possibility of exporting the Yangwang U8 to other markets. Guillaume Calvar, BYD’s marketing manager for France, stated, “This vehicle could perhaps be brought to certain European markets with limited distribution, but not necessarily exactly in its current form. But for the moment, we are … testing its appeal.”

As of the end of January, BYD reported the sale of 3,653 units of the Yangwang U8 since its deliveries commenced in November. Priced from 1.098 million yuan ($152,550) in China, the SUV has garnered attention for its unique features and luxurious appeal.

In addition to the Yangwang U8, BYD surprised auto enthusiasts by unveiling the Yangwang U9 sports supercar in China, opening pre-orders with a starting price of 1.68 million yuan.

BYD’s ambitious foray into luxury vehicles raises questions about the potential introduction of the Yangwang brand in Europe. Calvar mentioned, “BYD has not yet decided whether it will market its luxury Yangwang brand in Europe. For now, the company is focused on its electric and hybrid BYD range and launching its premium Denza brand.”

BYD continues to make waves in the automotive industry, showcasing its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and pushing the boundaries of what electric vehicles can achieve. As the Yangwang U8 captures attention at the Geneva car show, it marks another milestone for BYD in the global automotive landscape.
