The Ministry of Finance announced on Tuesday the disbursement of Rs17.4 billion to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), supplementing the Rs10 billion released in July 2023 for the upcoming general elections.

In a statement, the Finance Division clarified its commitment to supporting the ECP’s financial requirements for the electoral process.

Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi reassured the public on Monday that there is no financial crisis impeding the ECP’s preparations for the February 8 polls. Contradicting media reports of a funding shortfall, Solangi affirmed that all budgeted funds would be promptly released based on the ECP’s needs.

Solangi’s remarks were prompted by earlier reports suggesting that the ECP had summoned the finance secretary due to delayed election funds. He clarified that the federal cabinet had approved Rs42 billion for the ECP, with Rs10 billion already disbursed. Additionally, he confirmed that the ECP had requested an additional release of Rs17.4 billion.

Emphasizing the government’s dedication to ensuring free and fair elections, the minister referenced Article 218(3) of the constitution. This article underscores the constitutional mandate for the ECP to conduct elections independently and transparently.
