FIR filed against Mitchell Marsh in India

The 2023 World Cup has come to an end, but controversies involving the host nation, India, continue to surface.

In the final match on November 19, 2023, at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, Australia secured victory by six wickets over India.

A social media image featuring Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh resting his legs on the World Cup trophy drew scrutiny from Indian fans.

An FIR (First Information Report) has been filed against Mitchell Marsh in Uttar Pradesh, India. RTI Activist Pandit Keshav lodged the FIR, expressing concern that the photograph had offended the sentiments of Indian fans, particularly in the context of India’s defeat in the final match.

Alongside the FIR, Pandit Keshav forwarded a copy to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting a potential ban on Mitchell Marsh from participating in cricket activities in India.

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami expressed his displeasure with Marsh’s gesture, stating, “I am hurt. The trophy for which all the teams in the world fight, the trophy which you want to lift over your head, keeping a foot on that trophy did not make me happy.”

This incident is not the only controversy during the World Cup. Previously, Pakistan’s Zainab Abbas faced backlash in India due to past tweets, and Mohammad Rizwan encountered criticism for praying in the stadium.

India has a history of exhibiting a high level of intolerance, often raising objections and filing complaints over even minor issues. The FIR against Mitchell Marsh may be seen as an attention-seeking move, considering India has no ownership rights to the World Cup trophy.
