The government of Punjab is considering implementing measures similar to those used during the coronavirus pandemic to address the worsening smog situation in Lahore, the provincial capital.

According to sources, authorities are contemplating a complete shutdown on Wednesdays, during which all schools, markets, and factories would remain closed. Under this proposed policy, government departments would operate at 50% capacity on Wednesdays, and snap-checking would be conducted during weekends, specifically on Saturdays and Sundays.

The primary cause of the smog in the metropolis is reported to be unusual traffic, while factory emissions contribute to only 7% of the overall pollution in Lahore.

Sources have also indicated that heavy fines could be imposed on factories that violate environmental regulations, and repeated non-compliance could result in their closure.

The data suggests that the highest levels of smog are recorded during the first three days of the week, from Monday to Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa announced plans to implement a work-from-home policy for two months to combat smog in the Lahore Division. This decision was made following discussions with traders about the proposal to close markets on Wednesdays.

Commissioner Randhawa mentioned that traders have expressed support for the idea of keeping markets closed on Wednesdays as part of the anti-smog measures. He also noted that traders suggested different working hours for markets, and the final decision on market timings and closures would be made in consultation with traders.

Efforts are being made to address the pressing issue of smog in Lahore, with a focus on reducing pollution and protecting public health.
