CJP Isa appoints first-ever woman SC Registrar Jazeela Aslam

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa has appointed Ms Jazeela Aslam as the Supreme Court’s (SC) first female Registrar.

According to a news statement released here on Sunday, Dr. Muhammad Mushtaq Ahmed has been appointed as Secretary to the CJP, while Abdul Sadiq has been appointed as a staff officer.

It was stated that before her appointment as Registrar SC, Jazeela Aslam was the District and Sessions Judge Okara, and she had also served in the same capacity in Kasur and Sialkot. She is Punjab’s senior female District and Sessions Judge.

It stated that Jazeela Aslam joined the judicial service in 1994 as a Civil Judge and judicial magistrate. She has also worked as a Deputy Solicitor and an instructor at the Federal Judicial Academy, as well as the Punjab Judicial Academy’s Director of Academics.

Similarly, prior to her appointment, Dr Mushtaq Ahmed was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Shariah and Law at Shifa Tameer e Milat University, where he assisted in the establishment of the Law Department.

Eleven books and fifty research articles on criminal law, international humanitarian law, human rights law, Islamic Law, jurisprudence, Qur’anic studies, and comparative religion have been published by him.

On various occasions, he has served as an amicus curiae for the Supreme Court and as a jurist consultant for the Federal Shariat Court.

According to the report, Abdul Sadiq worked as a security officer in the Balochistan High Court before being appointed as a staff officer to the CJP. During the current Chief Justice’s tenure, he has been sent on deputation.

Key changes in SJC

As Justice Qaiz Faez Isa took oath as the 29th Chief Justice of Pakistan, significant changes occurred in the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) and the Judicial Commission.

According to reports, Justice Ijazul Ahsan has joined the SJC, while Justice Sardar Tariq is already a member of the council.

According to the Constitution, the SJC consists of the CJP and the two most senior judges.

Justice Muneeb Akhtar, on the other hand, has joined the Judicial Commission, which is in charge of appointing judges. The commission already includes Justice Sardar Tariq, Justice Ijazul Ahsan, and Justice Mansoor Ali Shah.

The CJP and four senior judges are members of the panel responsible for selecting judges for the superior judiciary, according to the Constitution. A retired judge, the law minister, and Pakistan’s attorney general are also members of the commission.

A member of the Pakistan Bar Council is also part of the Judicial Commission.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa took oath as the 29th chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) at a ceremony at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, following the retirement of Justice Umar Ata Bandial.

He was administered the oath of office by President Arif Alvi. Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar, top military officials, caretaker federal ministers, senators, and foreign ambassadors, attended the ceremony.
