'Double standards' of judiciary have harmed Pakistan: PM Shehbaz

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said “double standards” of the judiciary have harmed Pakistan in an irreparable way and the only way forward is equality of justice.

Speaking to the media here, the prime minister said that the “double standards” of the judiciary are not acceptable and such trends of courts having “likes and dislikes” are harmful to any society.

PM Shehbaz spoke to the media as he arrived at the Avenfield flats to have dinner with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif and his family.

The PM was accompanied by his son Suleman Sharif and his wife.

The prime minister, referring to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and his supporters receiving extraordinary relief from courts, stated that “double standards” of justice had been on display in recent years, with courts regularly granting bail to the PTI leader.

The premier contrasted this with the imprisonment, detention, and persecution of leaders of the erstwhile opposition parties, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), as well as those opposed to Imran Khan, during the PTI’s tenure in power.

He also mentioned the arrests of PPP members Faryal Talpur and Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who was visiting her father in jail.

According to the Prime Minister, the opposition leaders were imprisoned and had no legal recourse.

While opposition leaders faced trials and persecution at the hands of the PTI and the courts, the PM claimed that there was no justice available to them and that no one listened to their pleas.

“These days, judges grant bail at all hours of the day and night. People are upset because of the double standards.”

The Prime Minister stated that there is a collective obligation to play a part in ensuring the supremacy of the Constitution, adding that justice must not only be done but also seen to be done.

When asked about the dispute between the judiciary and the legislature, the premier stated that the supremacy of the Constitution and the legislature, as embodied in the Constitution, will not be compromised.

He stated that the Pakistani Constitution grants the parliament rights that cannot be taken away.

“The parliament is playing its full role at this time,” he explained.

PM Shehbaz stated that the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government is committed to “resolving Pakistan’s current problems; we are doing our best, and we will, inshallah, overcome these crises.” Pakistan will advance and take its rightful place.”

He went on to say that the country’s wheat production was at an all-time high last year, compared to the previous ten years.

“This is a blessing from Allah and a welcome development.” We are trying hard to find solutions to all problems.”

The prime minister arrived in the United Kingdom’s capital London on Wednesday evening to represent Pakistan at King Charles III’s coronation ceremony.

He stated that he will represent Pakistan at King Charles’ coronation and would attend a gathering of Commonwealth leaders on Friday.

Around 2,000 guests, including global royalty and world leaders, will attend the event in central London on Saturday, with huge crowds lining the route to and from Buckingham Palace.

On Monday, he is likely to return to Pakistan.
