The Pakistan women’s cricket team has secured a place in the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup by virtue of being the highest-ranked team outside of the six direct qualifiers and the host.
On Tuesday, the International Cricket Council announced the eight teams that have automatically qualified for the Women’s T20I event, with Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa securing places for being the top three teams in Group 1 of the recently-concluded ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa. England, India, and the West Indies also made the cut from Group 2.
Bangladesh secured a spot as hosts of the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, while Pakistan qualified as the next highest-ranked team in the rankings as of 27 February 2023. The final two spots in the ten-team tournament will be filled through a Global Qualifier to be held in early 2024, with the details of the tournament to be announced later.
Sri Lanka and Ireland, who participated in this year’s tournament, did not receive automatic qualification. Sri Lanka is currently ranked eighth in the rankings, while Ireland is 10th.
It’s worth noting that Australia won the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup for the sixth time after defeating South Africa in the final of the eighth edition of the tournament on Sunday.
