Aftab Sultan, the head of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), resigned as the organization’s anti-corruption watchdog on Tuesday.

According to well-placed sources, the NAB chairman met with the prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, who accepted his resignation.

Aftab Sultan resigned from his position, according to sources, because “he was requested to do some things that were not acceptable to him.”

According to additional information from the sources, Sultan had certain issues with the National Accountability (Amendment) Act, 2022, which restricted the authority of the anti-corruption agency.

In July of last year, Aftab Sultan, a former Director General (DG) of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), was named chairman of the National Accountability Bureau. Justice (retired) Javed Iqbal, who oversaw the NAB for four years and three months, has succeeded by him.

Sultan was a police officer who retired in BPS-22. He continued to hold top positions during the PPP and PML-N governments, serving as both DIG Sargodha and the head of the intelligence agency (IB).

A NAB referral was also granted against him, and he continued to be named as a co-accused in relation to irregularities in the purchase of automobiles on behalf of the SAARC summit alongside former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

The reference also included Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry and they were blamed for causing a loss of Rs1.95 billion to the national exchequer. However, the reference was approved in 2020 but was never filed against them.
